Temple Fork Outfitters announced today a terrific new series of four-piece fly rods, the BVK. The rods are gorgeous, they cast beautifully and the price is amazing ... just as we've come to expect from TFO.
Dealers will get their first look at the BVK at the International Fly Tackle Dealer Show next week in Denver, and I'm anticipating delivery by the end of September.
TFO President Rick Pope is adamant that the company will emphasize performance and value rather than getting caught up in a lot of technical talk, so I don't have details such as graphite modulus and resin formulas. I happen to think Rick is right, remembering the Modulus Wars of the late 1980s when companies were throwing around modulus numbers as if those numbers actually meant something. Short of introducing a truly revolutionary material, I'm much more interested in having a great design team of experts who know how to deliver high performance at a price I can afford. And that's why I got really excited when I heard that TFO guru Lefty Kreh had set out to design his best rod yet.
My first encounter with Lefty's latest project was back in April at the Federation of Fly Fishers conclave in New Braunfels, Texas. When I walked up to the TFO booth, Rick Pope said he wanted me to try a new prototype. It was a 9-foot 8-weight rod, and it blew my socks off. Honest, the rod was amazing. The rod was light, it was responsive and it cast like a dream. I wondered if Temple Fork might be getting into the Big Ticket rod market.
Imagine my surprise when I learned that these BVK rods would retail for $224.95-$249.95. True to form, TFO had decided once more to emphasize great performance at a tremendous price.
The rods also look great. The rich translucent olive blanks are topped with matching braided carbon fiber reel seats, REC recoil stripping guides, ultra lightweight chromium-impregnated stainless snake guides and flor grade grips that are comfortably contoured and uniquely contrasted.
TFO will initially offer four 9-foot BVK models, for line weights ranging from 5 through 8. The company plans to add more models later this year, including an 8-foot 3-weight and a 9-foot 10-weight.
The BVKs are backed by the same unconditional lifetime warranty that applies to all TFO fly rods. Simply return the damaged rod with $25 for shipping and handling, and the company will repair or replace the rod.
